The Best Travel Insurance for an Extended Honeymoon

Danyelle and I have been traveling on our sabbatimoon (our version of a sabbatical plus an extended honeymoon) since the beginning of 2018. That means it has been over 15 months of travel for us in which we have visited 51 different countries and moved over 70,000 miles.

With all this movement in such a short period, our risk of a travel accident increases. Thus, we like to be street-wise adventurers and having emergency protection is important to us. Whether that’s creating our living will or having continuity in our travel insurance, we are always prepared. However, finding the perfect travel insurance was not easy and took us nearly six months before we finally discovered the right plan for us.

When we were looking for travel insurance and health insurance at the beginning of our travels, we tore through dozens of options online. We looked at WorldNomads closely, easily one of the most visible options for digital nomads, before settling on GeoBlue, an international health insurance provider that I had used in the past via my employer 500 Startups. It was $285 per month for both of us and included health, travel, and dental insurance.

It’s important to note the difference between health insurance and travel insurance that includes medical support. For us, the important differentiator between health insurance on its own and travel insurance with medical was the emergency protections, including evacuation and helicopter extraction, life insurance, and other ancillary services.

We were planning to be gone for over one year, so the yearly total would have been $3,420, which was a little more expensive than WorldNomad’s $2,252 plan we were eyeing up, but it had more extensive coverage on the health and dental side for checkups and preventative care.

It wasn’t until we were six months into our travels (using GeoBlue) that we found SafetyWing. It was a godsend. The monthly cost was only $37 per person and it still included all of the emergency coverage we needed. We immediately dropped GeoBlue and switched over.

We’ve been SafetyWing fans and customers ever since (about nine months). Their insurance covers us in every country in the world, including an option to add the US for an extra cost. They keep the cost lower by removing US coverage where insurance is expensive not always needed and holding an age limit of 18-39 years old, which we fit nicely into (there are options for other ages). It is also super easy to sign up, automate your monthly payments, and turn the coverage on and off anytime you want.
